The Story of Hacienda Pinilla
Mr Pattillo (Hooper Gordon Pattillo 83), the owner of Hacienda Pinilla heralds from the construction industry in Atlanta, Georgia, and has been involved in Guanacaste for 34 years. It was he who helped convince Delta Airlines they should look at direct flights from the US to Liberia. His project here in Costa Rica was one of a handful of companies that agreed to underwrite the first flights with a multi-million-dollar bond. When it came time to privately fund a new terminal, Hacienda Pinilla again pledged money. Mr. Pattillo leads a company that encourages environmental housing development, offers employment to more than 600 Guanacastecans and is the leader of a foundation which focuses its efforts in supporting youngsters in scholarships to North American universities. The Fundación Progreso Guanacaste, the philanthropic arm of Hacienda Pinilla, is helping to build a $580,000 library in Santa Cruz, as one of its goals. Of the 18 scholarships Mr Pattillo has provided to local kids, only one has failed to get to a North American university. Mr. Pattillo was awarded the “Favorite Son of Guanacaste” award, bestowed upon him for his services to the province.
